To answer the most burning question on most of our minds is, yes, we will hold the reunion at St Charles, MO. The Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to express the importance of keeping all of our members safe and on that note would like to encourage getting covid shots and to wear masks especially if you haven’t been vaccinated. This is where we put our brothers and sisters first. Also it is great to announce that the Board unanimously voted to cover cost of refreshments in the hospitality room, Thursday’s field trip (transportation and lunch) and the Banquet will be paid by the association for members. Each member pays for their own room and any extra expenditures they may accrue.
There is a plan to ZOOM the business meeting. If there is enough interest, we would consider running ZOOM on Thursday’s activities as well. Please email Ron Powell at Ron-Powell@outlook.com and he will set you up over the phone. Please do not let ZOOM coverage encourage you to not attend in person, nothing can beat that experience! But if you cannot be there this is still a way to involve yourself with the association.

One of the Reunion 2021 Tour Stops
Hello 44th Engineer Battalion Association: Below is about a stop we are planning for Tour Day for September’s Reunion, it’s gonna be great I cannot wait, I’m booking my room now. I’m in town and could go home but I don’t want to miss any of the fun. I’m working on a special guided tour for us. The info below is copied from the internet.
The National Great Rivers Museum and the Melvin Price Locks and Dam combine a state of the art museum and one of the largest locks on the Mississippi River. In the museum, discover the story of life on the Mississippi. See how the flowing waters shaped our culture, history, economy, and ecology. Take a tour of the locks and dam, see the view of Alton from 80-feet above the water and watch barge traffic lock through, carrying soybeans, grain, coal and more the length of the river. The mighty Mississippi, where Lewis and Clark began their famed expedition.
Melvin Price Locks and Dam is a dam and two locks at river mile 200.78 on the Upper Mississippi River, about 17 miles north of Saint Louis, Missouri. The National Great Rivers Museum explains the structure and its engineering.
Construction began in 1979, the main lock opened in 1990, and the full structure was completed in 1994. It replaced the earlier Lock and Dam No. 26, demolished in 1990, and is the first replacement structure on the Upper Mississippi River nine-foot navigation project. The main lock is 1,200 feet long and 110 feet wide; the auxiliary is 600 feet long and 110 feet wide. The main lock has a vertical lift gate and a miter gate while the aux. lock has two miter gates. The dam is 1,160 feet long with 9 tainter gates, each 110 feet wide by 42 feet high.
Navigating the Channel: Stay between red and green buoys. They mark the river’s navigational channel. The Upper Mississippi River is approximately 670 miles long and has 29 locks along the river. Its navigation channel is at least 300 feet wide at all points, and a minimum depth of 9 feet.
It is named after Illinois Congressman Charles Melvin Price.

44th Business meeting itinerary….September 2021
Call to order.
Read minutes of last meeting and acceptance.
1. Vote for Officers. Two year term.
a) President; 1st and 2ndVise Presidents; and Treasurer (all others are appointed) At this time the candidates are;
1.) Rex Hurd – President
2.) Reginald Fordham – 1st Vice President
3.) Andrew Griffin – 2nd Vice President
4.) Ron Powell – Treasurer
2. Update constitution and by-laws.
a) CONSTITUTION *Proposed changes to the Constitution are to remove the references to Korea in an effort to appeal to all that have served with the 44th regardless of region. Or should we insert Iraq (Korea/Iraq) the two main areas of deployment.*
b) ARTICLE I - MEMBERSHIP *Consider changing executive committee to President, First Vice President and Treasurer, and of which a simple majority vote to authorize an associate member.*
c) ARTICLE VI - ADJUTANT *Consider the membership list to be maintained by the Treasurer, for he/she is the person that receives dues direct from members so to minimize the chances of mistakes on roster on who is current, or inactive for whatever reason. The other person to consider is the Newsletter Publisher while working closely with Treasurer, it is the publisher who mails out correspondences and must have an accurate membership list. What is trying to be done here is to reduce the number of people involved in the membership list from three to just one or two to try to minimize mistakes. *
d) ARTICLE X - NEWSLETTER *Propose an alteration to the issuing of a newsletter four times a year to allow two of those publications to be electronically emailed along with being posted on the website. The website is being maintained by annual dues as well, so membership is not being slighted and the savings of these non-mailings will help to cover the website cost. The newsletter previous to annual business meeting and following this meeting should still be published and mailed to all members of good standing. This proposal does not eliminate the possibility for mailing out of a newsletter that would have only been electronically disseminated if information it contains is deemed vital and necessary to membership by the President or the Board of Directors.*
e) ARTICLE XIII - MEETING, QUORUM & VOTING *The authorization of electronic forms of communication as a way for the Board of Directors to hold a meeting not requiring it to take place only in a physical location.*
f) ARTICLE XIV - SIGNATURE AUTHORITY * To have 2nd and 3rd Vice Presidents added as signatories on checks, and remove Adjutant for this is an appointed position.*
g) ARTICLE XVI - AMENDMENTS *To clarify in #2 the term notice of such amendments; Due to the nature of a business meeting, the details of what will be precisely voted on will not be known until the actual discussion and proposal has been put forth. It is suggested that in the preceding issue of the Newsletter that the membership is to be notified that changes to the Constitution and/or By-Laws are to be considered and voted upon with added details if known at the time, but not limited to only those details. In this way it does not restrict what can be done by the attending members and those voting by proxy to only what was written in the Newsletter. Also this will bring what attending membership/proxies can do at the annual business meeting closer to what the Board of Directors can already do with an amendment.*
3. Store- Have David Szprejda take over and do we expand items?
4. Concerning future reunions. (next 3 items)
a) Due to the limited attendances, should we consider having a joint reunion with a fellow engineer group ie; 802 Engineers.
1) The limited numbers make it hard to get any great deals from hotels or caterers.
5. Nominations and vote on next year’s reunion destination.
1) At this time Ft Carson CO is nominated.
6. Reunion Committee (2) volunteers…
7. Any other points that need to be discussed before adjournment?
If you cannot make the reunion please make sure you contact an attending member to ask if he/she would be a proxy for you. Then make sure you fill out the proxy form completely and get it mailed in on time so your vote will be counted.
